TYPE: NEW ZEALAND. Stewart Island/Rakiura, Peterson’s Inlet, G. Simpson s.n. (lectotype: CHR 48087A designated by Allan 1961: 661; isolectotypes: CHR 48087B, CHR 75171A, CHR 75171B, "...there is nothing to distinguish between O. angusifolia and O. chathamica and between O. lyallii and O. colensoi variety grandis. The latter species pair was also thought to be identical by Cockayne (see Simpson, 1945, p. 198).", Cockayne (1909–63) was uncertain as to the identity of this plant, and he thought it might be identical with O. lyallii Hook. f. But the branches of that species are erect, its leaves are wider in proportion to their length, and the teeth are small and regular, almost concealed in the marginal tomentum. At higher elevations the plant of Stewart Island has the straggling habit of the form common on the hills in the Fiord Botanical District, and they may be as the species, but I have not seen the flowers.
