Nomenclatural Comment
The epithet Apiti was chosen as "a Maori word signifying something confined; a friend; to lay a spell on; to attack; to put together; to place side by side; and to supplement" and that "this seemed to deal comprehensively with the challenging nature of the plant". The only species in the section is confined to Auckland and Campbell Islands.
