Taxonomic Comment
Historically considered to be the recently widespread NZ species and believed to be introduced to N.Z., because of its sudden appearance in large numbers in the Auckland area from the late 1960s, fide Singer 1974, pp. 39-40. A suggestion by Hood 1992, p. 296, that Favolaschia calocera has been present in N.Z. since at least 1906, is based on a record of Laschia thwaitesii in Massee 1907, p. 18; however, Massee's description (white stem) does not agree fully with Favolaschia calocera. F. claudopus was established for the NZ taxon by Zhang & Dai (2021) based on an NZ varietal type, but without firmly establishing the phylogenetic position of F. calocera, or designating an epitype, or considering F. thwaitesi, or discussing where the NZ introduced species may have originated [JAC]
