The epithet kororarekanum, originally published as Kororekana, appears to be based on a place name. Chapman et al (1957) cite this forma from Kororareka, so presumbably the epithet kororarekanum refers to the type locality., The author of this name is consistently cited as "F. Hauch" by Nordstedt in his 1887 paper, however the name of the Austrian algologist was Ferdinand Hauck.
