- Edwards (2009) in recording this taxon, also said it was "syn. E[rica] melanthera", without stating if he was referring to E. melanthera L., or to E. melanthera Thunb., both from the Cape, but the second is illegitimate as it is a later homonym of the former. E. melanthera L. is a currently regarded as a current name, but E. melanthera Thunb. is regarded, in Plants of the World Online (viewed 5 Jan 2021), as a synonym of Erica cristiflora Salisb.
