The epithet senex means old man, an allusion both to the white, whiskery indumentum and to the relatively large and woody stature of the plants, at least when compared to similar speedwell hebes (Garnock-Jones & Lloyd 2004)., Holotype: Webb Stream, Anatori Valley, calcareous sandstone cliff with southerly aspect, Garnock-Jones 2464 & W.
