Nomenclatural Comment
The protologue is sometimes given as Gard. Chron. n.s.1: 338 (1874), but this is in a brief article about three new Masdevallias discovered by M. Roezl. The relevant text reads "Masdevallia melanopus has, as it appears, whitish or white flower-tubes. It is the smallest of the three." In the previous paragraph, relevant text reads: "They have all spikes of six to nine flowers, developed at once, and grow in dense patches." The text in volume 2 on p. 322 reads: "Masdevallia melanopus, n.sp. A racemose, small-flowered species. The flowers would appear to be whitish, and all directed towards one side. The ovary, the base of the perigone, and the three bristles are very dark, perhaps greenish black or brownish black; when the flowers are dried those parts look black. Tthere are also some small dots of same colour over the perigone, but they are only well seen with a lens. One of M.Roezl's discoveries."
