Nomenclatural Comment: There has been confusion over the use of the names Gaultheria pyroloides and Gaultheria miqueliana Takeda. The latter, according to IPNI, was a nom. superfl. as Takeda included the syntype of G. pyroloides Miq. (from Japan) that was subsequently designated as the lectotype of G. pyroloides (cf., Vienna Code Art. 52 Note 2). The discussion by Fritsch and Trock (2007) Lectotypification of Gaultheria pyrolifolia and G. pyroloides (Ericaceae), Journal of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas 1(1): 97–102 (https://www.jstor.org/stable/41971393) is useful.
