Nomenclatural Comment
Epilobium vernicosum is accepted as a distinct species by some authors (e.g. Mark 2021) and online sources (NZPCN, POWO). However, following Raven & Raven (1976) and Webb et al. (1988; Flora of New Zealand, Vol. 4), it is here treated as conspecific with E. glabellum and placed in synonymy. Although E. vernicosum has been characterised by its preference for base-rich substrates (e.g. limestone, marble), decumbent habit, very glossy leaves, and larger pale pink, deeply lobed flowers, these features were considered by Raven & Raven (1976) and Webb et al. (1988) to fall within the range of morphological and ecological variation of the widespread and variable E. glabellum.
