- Nomenclatural Comment
- Oxalis mirbelii Dehnh. has probably been confused with O. megalorrhiza Jacq. in New Zealand and may account for at least some NZ record. The distinction between these taxa was discussed by Shaw (2022), who noted that O. mirbelii can be distinguished from genuine O. megalorrhiza by its bright green rather than glaucous-green leaflets, fewer-flowered inflorescences, and abundant seed production. Oxalis mirbelii is self-compatible and readily produces fertile seed, whereas O. megalorrhiza is not known to be self-fertile. Fresh and pressed material from Whanganui previously identified as O. megalorrhiza appears consistent with O. mirbelii. The source plant produces abundant fertile seed, supporting this identification. The native distribution of O. mirbelii on the Chilean coast is also biogeographically plausible for a taxon naturalised in New Zealand. However, diagnostic leaf characters, particularly colour, glossiness and glaucousness, can be difficult to assess reliably in dried herbarium material. Further examination of CHR collections, preferably supplemented by fresh material, is required to establish the extent of O. mirbelii in New Zealand and determine whether all or only some records currently attributed to O. megalorrhiza belong to this species.
