- Taxonomic Comment
- Horak2008 under E. captiosum says "As pointed out in Horak (1983) the type material of Entoloma niveum is in poor condition. As the result of a critical re-examination of the authentic specimens it could be demonstrated that the type material consists of a mixed collection. Accordingly, it was necessary to propose a new name and upgraded description for this rather common New Zealand taxon." Horak clearly considers the type collection of E. niveum to contain both E. captiosum and E. sericellum and rejects the name E. niveum. The cited Horak 1983 (Mycogeography in the South Pacific region: Agaricales, Boletales) does not include any discussion of E. niveum and the 1980 and 1973 monographs make no mention of the type condition. In addition, Horak 2008 includes the type collection of E. niveum under synonymy with E. sericellum. Noordeloos 2010 (The Entolomataceae of Tasmania) also mentions a study of the type collection and clearly refers to the component now named E. captiosum. A simples solution is to consider E. niveum a taxonomic synonym of E. sericellum. The possibility remains, however, that the non. E. captiosum component of the holotype may be the same as E. albidosimulans.E. niveum is a nom. conf. [JAC]
