- Edwards (2009) recorded this taxon as Erica erigena syn. Erica mediterranea, but did not state if he was referring to Erica medterranea L. (1771) or to Erica mediterranes Sieber ex Tausch. (1834). The former is regarded in Plants of the World Online (viewed 5 Jan 2021), as a synonym of Erica carnea L., and the latter illegitimate name, as a synonym of Erica verticillata P.J.Bergius, where as Erica erigena R.Ross is an accepted name in the same source.
