Nomenclatural Comment
The epithet wairua refers to the type locality (Cape Reinga) a culturally significant area in Maoridom. According to Maori lore, upon death the spirit travels to the pohutukawa tree (Metrosideros excelsa) at the very tip of Cape Reinga and climbs down to the sea below before eventually rejoining the ancestors.
