Nomenclatural Comment: The epithet waimakaririense refers to the type locality (River Waimakariri)., Dixon (1923) tentatively referred Brown's Gymnostomum wamakaririense (1894) to his Weissia viridula var. gymnostoma Dixon (1923) [which was invalid as Weissia viridula was an illegitimate name]. He wrote, "I have not much hesitation in referring here the three species of Brown's published in Trans. N.Z. Inst., vol. 26, but as the specimens are not available the matter cannot be definitely settled". Dixon's invalid Weissia viridula var. gymnostoma was synonymised by Sainsbury (1955) with his Weissia contoversa var. gymnostoma.
